Today we’re talking about John C Maxwell’s Law of Buy In.
The Law of Buy In says: People Buy In to the Leader Before They Buy In to the Vision.
Now, this was a tough one for me when I was a young man, and just working my way into leadership. I had a big vision for my life. i had a big vision for where I wanted to go. I had a big vision for what I wanted to accomplish for me and my family.
The only challenge with that is this: I need other people to help me to accomplish my vision.
And you’ve already caught the point: all the focus was on me…it was on “I”…and what I wanted to accomplish.
There was no way I was ever going to get anyone to buy into a vision that was about me. What I had to do was to get them to buy in to me firs. And there’s really only one way to get people to buy in to you, and that is for you to buy in to them!
You’ve got to buy in to their life, and buy in to their vision, and buy in to their dream. You’ve got to be authentic. You’ve got to be real. You’ve got to make those people love you. And the only way to get people to love you is when they know from your heart that you love them, that you’re vested in them, and that you want as much for them as you want for yourself.
Now, if you can learn to do that as a leader, you can mobilize an army, and get them to do just about anything that you need to do together.
